Family rights and responsibilities

 Quick Summary

Human rights are essential to leading a full and enjoyable life. The Convention on the Rights Of The Child, sets out the expected standards for the community for protecting a child’s rights and promoting their survival, growth and wellbeing. In Australia it is the responsibility of everyone who makes decisions and acts on behalf of children to do this in the best interests of the child. This includes parents and legal guardians, and people, services, and agencies that support parents and guardians, for example, advocates, educators, disability support professionals, and the Child Safety Service. The convention expects that decisions being made, guidance provided, and actions being taken for children uphold their rights and are in their best interests. As the primary care givers and guardians of children, the rights of parents and guardians are intertwined with the rights of the child.

If you feel your rights or the rights of your child have been violated or denied, you have options that you can pursue.

If you or your child have been discriminated against, report it to the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner at the Equal Opportunity Tasmania website. You can also phone them on 1300 305 062 or text 0409 401 083.

Rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. If you have any documents, policies, and agreements, review them to see what you agreed to and what responsibilities you have.

If you believe something has occurred that is not in the best interests of your child, raise this with the person, service, or agency. If you or your child has a disability, you can gain assistance from an Advocate.
