Medicare

 Quick Summary

Medicare is Australia’s universal healthcare system. People enrolled in Medicare can get some or all the costs of necessary healthcare paid. Medicare does not pay for all medical services. Some doctors bulk bill, which means Medicare pays the doctor directly and there is no cost to you. If your doctor does not bulk bill, you may still be able to claim some of the cost back from Medicare. You can enrol in Medicare if you live in Australia and are - an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, applying for permanent residency, or a temporary resident covered by a ministerial order. People enrolled in Medicare can also access the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (P.B.S.), which lowers the cost of some prescription medicines. The Australian Government pays for the cost of Medicare through the Medicare Levy, a tax that is paid by all working Australians.
