Quick Summary
Dentists are health professionals who specialize in treating conditions of the teeth, mouth and jaws. Good dental care is extremely important for everyone, especially children whose teeth and jaw are still growing. Dentists may take X-rays to make sure teeth and jaw line up properly. Sometimes special plates or braces are used. Dentists also treat tooth decay and gum conditions. When a person is unable to take care of their own teeth, a dentist can help with techniques for carers to make dental care easier. Some dentists specialize in treating people with disabilities. Sometimes a person with disabilities may need to be treated in a hospital setting. There are 2 Special Care Dental Units in Tasmania, at Royal Hobart Hospital and North West Regional Hospital. Some Special Care services are also provided from the Northern Dental Centre in Launceston. Your doctor would need to refer you to these services.
