GET STARTED

Think about what activities you enjoy doing or what you would like to try. Finding Your Way’s, Choose A Sport page will help.

Work out, how much time you want to spend doing your activity, when you are free to do this activity, and if you want to spend money.

Decide if you want to do an activity for fitness, relaxation, or both.

Decide if you want to do an activity by yourself, or as part of a group.

Decide if you want to do an outside or inside activity.

Once you have worked out what you want to do, your next step is to find someone that offers that activity. For example, Police and Citizen Youth Clubs, or local councils have a lot of information about what is happening in your area.

The Tasmanian Government have an online booklet listing various recreation opportunities for older adults in the North and North West of Tasmania. Copies are available at libraries, councils and Service Tasmania outlets. To download one go to the Communities, Sport and Recreation Website.

Parks and Wildlife offer a range of free recreation activities throughout the year. For more information visit the Parks and Wildlife Service Website.

Did you know parkrun operates in 13 different locations in Tasmania?  Parkrun organise free 5km timed runs which are safe and easy to take part in. For more information visit the parkrun website.

For more information and opportunities for recreation for people with disability across Tasmania, please visit the Service Section on this page.

ACTION STEPS

Here you can find a simple list of the best actions to take if you are interested in this topic:

1 . Decide what recreation activity to undertake. Review the getting started section of Finding Your Way.

2 . If you have not a physical examination for a while, make a doctor’s appointment for a check-up before you start doing your chosen activity.

3 . Phone, or drop in to your local Police, Citizens and Youth Club or Council to find out about recreation activities (individual and group) held in your town/city.

4 . Go online to find other local recreation organisations and ideas for activities.

5 . Phone or email recreation organisations to find out more. Ask, where and when an activity is held, how much it will cost and what you will need to bring.

6 . If you need transport to get to an activity, think about your transport options. Will you catch a bus, get a lift with friends or family, or catch a taxi?

7 . Ask a friend or family member if they would like to join you to do the activity.

8 . Put your new activity in your calendar, and if you really enjoy it make it a regular part of your weekly routine. Get started and enjoy your new recreation activity.
