Recreation for youth

 Quick Summary

Tasmania has many opportunities for young people to get involved in recreation, like cycling and walking paths and trails, exploring the bush, and playing at the beach, public playgrounds and skate parks. If you or your child are teenagers, keeping active is especially important. If you do 60 minutes of physical activity or recreation every day this will help you physically and mentally. Healthy choices as a young person will mean you are more likely to develop healthy habits and grow up to be a healthy adult. Recreation includes all activity that involves physical movement. Recreation is a great, fun and relaxing way to keep healthy.

ACTION STEPS

Here you can find a simple list of the best actions to take if you are interested in this topic:

1 . Think about what physical activities you enjoy doing the most. Is there something you would like to try or are interested in?

2 . Think about what times of the day are you most likely to do a physical activity and if you want to do your chosen activity with others.

3 . Decide if you want the activity to be free or if you can afford to spend money on it. Find out where and when activities are held.

4 . Do some research. Go online to find local recreation organisations and ideas for activities. Talk to mates and family or ask people from your network of support. Contact your local council to find out what is available for youth in your council area and what events or opportunities the council is aware of.

5 . Decide what you want to do and then if needed make contact with your chosen recreation organisation or organiser to find out more.

6 . If you need transport, look at your transport options (bus, lift from friends/ family, taxi, walk, riding a bike etc).

7 . Put your new activity in your diary or calendar, and if you really enjoy it make it a regular part of your routine. Get started and enjoy your new recreation activity.
